Today we leave the Bruin internet pretty darn satisfied. We accomplished what we set out to do and got what we wanted. Bruin football is in great hands now, and the future looks very bright. The excitement around our football program is as uplifting, if not more, as the excitement around our basketball program was when we hired Ben Howland. We are already seeing the benefits of the change in leadership. UCLA football is back, and we can all now go back to being just fans again.

As we head into our final day here at DD, there has been a huge change in the fortunes and perception of our football program … just as we and all Bruin fans have long hoped for. In his first week, Coach Neuheisel has put UCLA back on the national scene, appearing on national broadcasts and local broadcasts, and in papers throughout the nation, too many times to count. Big time analysts are talking about UCLA football in reverential tones again, almost giddy that UCLA is back. When was the last time we heard that?? Recruits are staying committed, a 5-star QB might transfer in, top assistants are staying, new assistants with experience are coming to UCLA, and the fan base is ecstatic. All in just one week.

According to the Dallas Morning News, SMU has offered June Jones their head coaching job. June Jones will be meeting with SMU officials tomorrow. His current contract at Hawaii ends in June and pays him $800,000 reportedly. Jones is going a long way to get Hawaii to up their bid for him, if that's what this is. SMU is said to have $10 million for their coaching staff. That sounds like a pot of gold worth flying all the way to Texas for. DMN: read more
The Detroit News reported this morning that Michigan QB coach Scot Loeffler interviewed with coach Rick Neuheisel last night. This news came in a report on prized 5-star freshman QB Ryan Mallet on whether or not he will transfer out of Michigan: read more
I won't deny that I had my concerns about hiring Rick Neuheisel and he certainly wasn't my first choice. But, he was the best choice left and now that he's the UCLA coach, its time for all good UCLA fans to come to the aid of their coach and give him our full support.
And, one of the things we'll need to do is to continue to put pressure on the administration to read more
Update: Ryan Mallett's mother is saying that her son has not made any decision yet. Calls reports of his transferring to UCLA false.
Rick Neuheisel has been on a tear. As we pointed earlier this week, Michigan 5-star freshman QB Ryan Mallett is expected to transfer to UCLA. There were rumors all day on the boards. Now, AM 570 just reported that the transfer will happen. For the rest, we will send you to BruinsNation who has the scoop. Wow. UCLA football is exciting again! Go Bruins!!
Update: The ND paper got it wrong. Reggie Moore has been hired by coach Neu but his position has yet to be determined, per the official press release from UCLA.
It's official. While Coach Neuheisel was on the national radio programs yesterday morning, then solidifying the key defensive coaching staff (Walker et al), and getting back on the radio shows and tele-conferences, he was also nailing down an offensive coach, former UCLA receiver Reggie Moore as our new WR coach. Reggie has been WR coach for North Dakota State for the last 4 years. Brrrr. Anyhow, here is the news: read more
So, it's official. All the gamesmanship, posturing and rumor-mongering can finally end. The biggest pieces are in place, the biggest and bitter questions resolved. DeWayne Walker has been hired by Head Coach Rick Neuheisel as his Defensive Coordinator. Coach Neu, and UCLA football, can now move forward in building a great future! There are rumors on a North Dakota State board that one of their own, WR coach Reggie Moore (UCLA grad), has been hired as UCLA's new WR coach. It's coming from a respected source on that board, but it still carries the weight of internet rumor. It's funny that everyone on that board believes it. Someone even posted the vacant assistant coach job listing as proof. Just another data point. No word yet on how the DeWayne Walker interview with Coach Neuheisel went today. But if he went in making demands to keep his defensive staff together chances are he left unhappy. Hard to figure out why he would EXPECT that, but his pimpers online are pushing that line.
There are conflicting reports but SuC players drenched Ken Norton Jr. yesterday at the Rose Bowl, which kind of backs up ABC's report during the game that Rick Neuheisel hired Ken Norton Jr. to be on his staff. The obvious question is in what capacity?? Defensive Coordinator, as ABC suggested?? It would be hard to believe that the ink is dry on such a deal when the LAT is reporting that Neu will be meeting with DeWayne Walker this morning about the DC position. Obviously, if Walker stays because Rick wants him to and they can come to an agreement then great. If he doesn't stay then thank you and good luck.
